History**
The original World Trade Centre proposal called for a $400 million project
on the Toronto Harbour Commission parcel situated between Yonge and
Bay Streets and south of the Gardnier Expressway to the lakeshore. There
were to be three 26-storey buildings plus 2 residential towers of 32
and 25-storeys each with a total of 700 luxury condominiums, interconnected
by walkways. The WTC was also proposed to connect through the use of
covered walkways under the expressway and railway viaduct, with the
city's downtown core. Construction was to begin in mid-1987.* [See Photos]
Zeidler Partnership Architects, Camrost Development Corp. and York-Hannover Developments Ltd. jointly
constructed the present 700,000 square foot, 2-building, 700 unit
World
Trade Centre complex. The original 3 buildings to the north of Harbour
St. were never built and the land subsequently sold to the developer
of the Pinnacle Centre at 33 Bay St.
